2 FEB 2023: American Legion Horace Orr Post 29 DONATES $20,000!

It was a rainy night in Georgia, but American Legion Horace Orr Post 29 in Marietta, GA hosted its General Meeting on 2 February 2023 with Special Presentations from the 2022 Veterans Memorial 5K.  Commander Walt Cusick, Jr. called the meeting to order after a great hour of “meeting and greeting” and an incredible dinner!  He provided some history about the Veterans Memorial 5k with tributes to Tom Bell, Ed Bruce and the many members, donors and sponsors that have made this event such an incredible success over the years.

Designated charities for the Veterans Memorial event include the Shepherd’s Men SHARE Initiative; the Georgia National Guard Foundation, and the Post 29 Service Office.  Donations were made to each organization in the amount of $20,000.00 from the November 12, 2022, Race!

This year, COL Barry Simmons, GAARNG 78th AVN Troop Command; Col Ron Speir, GA ANG Director of Operations; Col Roger Brooks, GA ANG Director of Mission Support; 1SG Tyler Lawver, GAARNG Operations NCO R&R, and Harriet Morgan, Program Manager of the Foundation, attended this awesome event.  COL Simmons presented a framed UH-60 Blackhawk Flyover print to Commander Cusick, coined by BG Dwayne Wilson, Commanding General of the Army National Guard.

Post 29 continues to be active in the community and through social media with Veterans Outreach, Youth Activities, Golf Tournaments, ALR Motorcycle Rides, Sons of American Legion Monthly Breakfasts, Women’s Auxiliary, and numerous events in their Social Quarters which include an upcoming Super Bowl Party on February 12th and a Comedy Show with Jimm Gossett on March 4th to name a few!  Membership opportunities always available!

The Georgia National Guard Foundation has been a designated charity partner for the Veterans Memorial 5K since 2015.   On behalf of the Guard’s Military Leadership and the Foundation’s Board of Directors, a huge “Thank You” to American Legion Post 29 for their friendships and ongoing support. More than $200,000.00 has been donated to the Foundation from this event to help the Soldiers and Airmen of the Georgia National Guard faced with unexpected emergencies and financial hardships.
